Pedestal Sink and Vanity Installation

Replacing a bathroom sink or vanity can dramatically change the look and function of a bathroom, but the plumbing behind the fixture matters just as much as the finished appearance.

Steven Bailey Plumbing & Rooter provides professional pedestal sink and vanity installation throughout San Francisco, Marin County, and San Mateo County. We install new bathroom sinks, connect faucets and drains, replace shutoff valves, modify supply and waste piping when necessary, and help ensure the new fixture is properly integrated with the existing plumbing system.

Whether you are replacing an older vanity, installing a pedestal sink, upgrading a powder room, or completing a larger bathroom renovation, we can evaluate the plumbing before installation and determine what modifications may be required.

Pedestal Sink Installation

Pedestal sinks provide a clean, traditional appearance and are especially useful in smaller bathrooms where floor space is limited.

Unlike a vanity, however, a pedestal sink leaves much of the plumbing visible. This means the location and appearance of the drain, trap, shutoff valves, and water supply connections become more important.

A professional pedestal sink installation may involve:

  • Removing the existing sink or vanity
  • Installing and securing the pedestal and basin
  • Connecting the faucet
  • Installing the pop-up drain assembly
  • Connecting the P-trap
  • Connecting hot and cold water supplies
  • Replacing shutoff valves when necessary
  • Adjusting drain or supply locations
  • Securing the fixture to the wall
  • Testing for leaks and proper drainage

Proper positioning is especially important because the sink must align correctly with both the wall and existing plumbing.

Bathroom Vanity Installation

Bathroom vanities provide additional storage, countertop space, and design flexibility compared with pedestal sinks.

Installing a new vanity often appears simple until the cabinet is placed and the existing plumbing no longer lines up with the new sink.

Different vanity sizes and sink configurations can require modifications to the drain, water supplies, shutoff valves, or trap arrangement.

We can install the plumbing for:

  • Single-sink vanities
  • Double-sink vanities
  • Freestanding vanities
  • Wall-mounted vanities
  • Vessel sinks
  • Undermount sinks
  • Drop-in sinks
  • Integrated sink countertops

Replacing an Existing Vanity

Replacing an existing vanity is often straightforward when the new fixture uses a similar footprint and sink location.

However, problems can arise when:

  • The sink is positioned differently
  • The cabinet interferes with existing piping
  • The drain comes through the floor instead of the wall
  • Shutoff valves are badly corroded
  • Existing piping is improperly aligned
  • Old drain piping is deteriorated
  • The new vanity has drawers or shelves where plumbing currently runs

These conditions should be identified before the vanity is permanently installed.

Pedestal Sink vs. Vanity: Which Is Better?

The best choice depends on the bathroom and how the space is used.

A pedestal sink can be an excellent choice for powder rooms, smaller bathrooms, and spaces where an open appearance is preferred.

A bathroom vanity provides additional storage and countertop space and may be more practical in a primary or frequently used bathroom.

From a plumbing standpoint, vanities also provide the advantage of concealing much of the drain and water piping.

Pedestal sinks require a cleaner plumbing installation because the trap and supply lines remain visible.

Faucet Installation

A new sink installation usually includes a bathroom faucet.

We can install faucets designed for common configurations such as:

  • Single-hole faucets
  • Centerset faucets
  • Widespread faucets
  • Wall-mounted faucets where the rough plumbing is already suitable

Proper faucet installation includes securing the fixture, connecting the hot and cold supplies, installing the drain assembly, and checking for leaks.

Drain and P-Trap Installation

Every bathroom sink requires a properly installed drain assembly and trap.

The P-trap holds a small amount of water that helps prevent sewer gases from entering the bathroom through the drain.

During a sink or vanity installation, the existing drain location must align with the new sink outlet.

If the drain is too high, too low, or significantly offset, modifications may be required before the new sink can be connected correctly.

Pop-Up Drain Assemblies

Many bathroom sinks use a pop-up drain assembly operated by a lift rod or push-style mechanism.

Improper installation can cause leaks around the drain flange or prevent the stopper from opening and closing correctly.

We install and adjust drain assemblies as part of qualifying sink and faucet installations.

Shutoff Valve Replacement

Bathroom sink shutoff valves allow the faucet to be serviced without shutting water off to the entire property.

These valves are often discovered to be leaking, corroded, or unable to close completely during sink replacement.

If the existing valves are worn or unreliable, replacing them while the sink or vanity is already disconnected can help prevent future problems.

Water Supply Line Replacement

Flexible supply lines connect the faucet to the hot and cold shutoff valves.

Older supply lines can corrode, deteriorate, or become damaged during fixture replacement.

When appropriate, we install new faucet supply lines as part of the new sink installation.

Plumbing Modifications for a New Vanity

Changing from one vanity configuration to another may require moving plumbing inside the wall or cabinet.

For example, converting from a single vanity to a double vanity may require additional drainage and water supply connections.

A wall-mounted vanity may require plumbing to be repositioned so it does not remain visible beneath the cabinet.

We can evaluate the proposed vanity and determine whether plumbing modifications should be completed before the cabinet and countertop are installed.

Converting a Vanity to a Pedestal Sink

Replacing a vanity with a pedestal sink can expose plumbing that was previously hidden inside the cabinet.

Existing drain and supply piping may not be positioned attractively or correctly for the pedestal sink.

In these situations, the piping may need to be relocated or modified so the finished installation looks clean and operates properly.

The wall behind the old vanity may also require repair or finishing once the cabinet is removed.

Converting a Pedestal Sink to a Vanity

Replacing a pedestal sink with a vanity is often easier because the cabinet can conceal some existing plumbing.

However, the drain and water supplies still need to fit within the cabinet without interfering with drawers, shelves, or structural components.

Cutting excessive holes into a new cabinet to accommodate poorly positioned plumbing should be avoided when a cleaner plumbing modification is practical.

Double Vanity Plumbing

Installing a double vanity can require considerably more plumbing than replacing a single sink.

The second sink needs its own faucet, drain connection, and water supplies.

Depending on the existing plumbing and layout, this may require changes inside the wall to properly serve both sinks.

Drainage and venting should be considered before assuming a second sink can simply be connected to the existing plumbing.

Wall-Mounted Vanities

Floating or wall-mounted vanities have become increasingly popular in modern bathrooms.

Because the floor remains visible underneath the cabinet, exposed plumbing can affect the finished appearance.

Drain and supply piping may need to be carefully positioned before installation so it remains concealed within the vanity.

The wall must also be capable of supporting the fixture and countertop.

Vessel Sink Installation

Vessel sinks sit on top of the bathroom counter rather than inside it.

These installations often use specialized faucets and drain assemblies.

The height of the vanity, sink, and faucet should all be considered together to ensure comfortable use and proper water flow into the basin.

Drain alignment is also important because vessel sinks may place the drain at a different elevation than conventional sinks.

Customer-Supplied Sinks, Vanities and Faucets

We can install many customer-supplied sinks, vanities, faucets, and related fixtures when they are compatible with the existing plumbing and installation conditions.

Before purchasing a fixture, homeowners should consider:

  • Sink dimensions
  • Faucet-hole configuration
  • Drain location
  • Cabinet dimensions
  • Countertop thickness
  • Available wall space
  • Existing plumbing locations

Because we do not control the condition, quality, compatibility, or source of customer-supplied equipment, customer-provided fixtures and parts are generally not covered by our parts warranty.

Our workmanship warranty applies according to the terms provided for the installation.

Common Problems We Find During Sink Replacement

Removing an older sink or vanity can reveal plumbing conditions that were previously hidden.

Common examples include:

  • Corroded shutoff valves
  • Improper drain connections
  • Deteriorated traps
  • Leaking supply lines
  • Damaged cabinet plumbing
  • Incorrect drain height
  • Poorly supported piping
  • Old galvanized water lines
  • Previous temporary repairs

Addressing these problems during installation can help provide a cleaner and more reliable finished system.

Why Professional Sink and Vanity Installation Matters

Bathroom sinks combine water supply, drainage, cabinetry, countertops, and finished surfaces in a relatively small space.

A leaking faucet connection or drain assembly can damage a new vanity before the problem is noticed.

Improper trap alignment can create drainage problems, and poorly positioned piping can interfere with drawers and storage areas.

Professional installation helps ensure the sink, faucet, drain, and water connections are properly assembled, aligned, and tested.
