Moving a sink or appliance several feet may involve substantially more than extending a pair of water lines. Drainage slope, venting, floor construction, wall framing, piping access, appliance requirements, and existing plumbing locations can all influence whether a proposed layout is practical. Relocating the kitchen sink to an island, for example, can require a completely different drainage and venting approach from keeping the sink against an existing plumbing wall. We recommend evaluating major layout changes before cabinet plans are finalized whenever possible. In some cases, a small adjustment to the proposed layout can simplify the plumbing considerably while preserving the overall design.

Older Homes and Existing Kitchen Plumbing

Many homes throughout San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area contain plumbing that has been modified repeatedly over decades. Once cabinets and walls are removed, it is common to discover aging galvanized piping, corroded copper, deteriorated valves, improperly supported piping, questionable drainage modifications, or other conditions that were hidden during normal use. Installing an expensive new kitchen over deteriorated plumbing can create avoidable problems later. Where appropriate, we may recommend replacing accessible portions of aging or damaged piping while the kitchen is already open. This can be considerably easier than attempting the same repair after new cabinetry, countertops, tile, and flooring have been installed.

Kitchen remodeling can also be an appropriate time to evaluate hot-water delivery. Long waits for hot water, inadequate recirculation, restricted piping, low water pressure, or an improperly configured water-heating system can affect the performance of a newly remodeled kitchen. For homes undergoing larger renovations, improvements to hot-water recirculation or piping configuration may be considered alongside the kitchen work rather than addressed separately after construction is complete.

Whenever the project scope allows, we prefer to approach kitchen remodeling plumbing as a complete process. During the rough-in phase, piping and connections can be positioned according to the approved layout and manufacturer specifications. Once cabinets, countertops, flooring, tile, and other finished surfaces are installed, we can return for applicable fixture and appliance connections, final testing, and adjustments. This continuity helps reduce situations where one contractor roughs in a system without knowing what another contractor will eventually be expected to connect.

Coordination With Contractors, Designers, and Cabinet Installers

Kitchen remodeling involves several trades whose work frequently overlaps.
