What Is Rough Plumbing?
Rough plumbing is the portion of a construction project completed before finished fixtures and surfaces are installed. Water lines, drains, vents, gas piping, and fixture connections are positioned according to the project layout so the plumbing will be ready for toilets, faucets, sinks, showers, appliances, water heaters, and other equipment later in the construction process. Although much of this work eventually becomes hidden, the rough plumbing stage is one of the most important phases of the project. Incorrect fixture locations, poorly planned piping routes, insufficient service access, or conflicts with framing and other trades can become expensive to correct once drywall, tile, cabinetry, and flooring have been installed.
Water Supply Rough-In
Domestic water piping must be routed and sized around the fixtures and equipment it will serve. During rough plumbing, hot and cold water lines are brought to planned fixture locations and coordinated with walls, floors, cabinetry, appliances, and other building components. Shutoff locations and future access should also be considered before the system becomes concealed. Good water-distribution planning considers more than simply getting a pipe to each fixture.
